For Schools
What We Do
We take a holistic approach to intervention and tackle the areas that can be most challenging when supporting children with communication difficulties. Our diagram below outlines the areas we always consider when working in schools. Click on each area to find out more! For answers to some commonly asked questions, have a look at our Frequently Asked Questions page.We make the often difficult task of effective differentiation of the curriculum more manageable:
- Advice on how to make class learning objectives accessible to those with SEN
- Joint planning and integrated goal setting
- Class-based approaches that work
We know that children who are not learning language in a typical way may need more support to generalise new skills:
- Targets are integrated into the curriculum
- Strategies are embedded into the classroom
- 1:1 therapy programmes, groups and class based interventions link and complement each other
We have learnt that children progress fastest when their everyday environment is tailored to their needs:
- Staff training to embed communication friendly strategies into the classroom
- Support to adapt adult interaction styles
- Building on what is already in place to increase opportunities for communication development across the school day
- Implementation of visual supports
We work with teachers to make links between a child’s oral language profile and their literacy skills:
- Therapy targets are linked with reading and writing learning outcomes
- Effective, colour coded visual systems to enable more structured writing
- Vocabulary teaching strategies that will support at individualised, targeted and/or universal levels
We strongly believe in supporting students to be independent learners:
- Strategies are selected to empower children to take charge of their communication needs and use strategies independently
- Positive learner behaviours embedded into therapy targets e.g. identifying when they have and have not understood, asking for help
